About Rainforest Alliance Certification
Established in 1987, the Rainforest Alliance is an international, non-profit conservation organization that works to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods by transforming land-use practices and consumer behaviour. In collaboration with the Sustainable Agriculture Network, a group of conservation organizations based in Latin America, Rainforest Alliance certification is given to sustainably managed farms that grow crops such as coffee, fruit, ferns, cocoa, flowers and tea. Trained auditors evaluate each certified farm at least once per year to guarantee its compliance with a comprehensive set of criteria that lead to environmental and social responsibility and efficient farm operations. The criteria were developed through a process of consultation and investigation in several Latin American countries from 1991 through 1993, and were most recently updated in 2010.
Rainforest Alliance Certified™ farms are managed for the benefit of farmers, farm workers and the environment. That means that employees of Rainforest Alliance Certified farms live and work under decent and safe conditions. In order to achieve and maintain certification, farms must meet a range of standards that protect workers’ rights including the right to organize, the right to a safe working environment and the right to be paid at least the national minimum wage. Rainforest Alliance certification also ensures that farm workers are provided with dignified housing, clean drinking water, medical care for themselves and their families and free education for their children.
The lives & livelihoods of 25 million farmers and their families in 50 countries around the world depend on the production of coffee. Many of them are poor and live in areas that are environmentally sensitive and considered high-priority by conservationists. By adopting sustainable practices, farmers can help conserve their environment and achieve a better quality of life. They are also eligible to earn the Rainforest Alliance Certified™ seal.
By choosing coffee bearing the Rainforest Alliance Certified™ seal, coffee drinkers are giving these coffee farmers an incentive to cultivate their beans using methods that protect the environment and the well-being of workers and their communities.
